Industry Publication of Company Dictionaries
The target milestone is the deployment of Web-enabled source for well log producer company reference data,
sourced from company DLIS dictionaries. Note that DLIS mnemonics are used in
both DLIS format files and in files that use other well log formats. Therefore,
integrating company dictionaries is relevant to a broad segment of the
industry.
- Companies were asked to provide the non-proprietary portions of their DLIS
dictionaries to POSC in their current forms. Baker Hughes and Schlumberger
have done so. Halliburton data is still needed. Other suppliers of well log
and drilling / mud log data will also be encouraged to add their products.
- POSC analyzed the similarities and differences among the company
dictionaries and derived a common format.
- POSC developed and deployed an integrated set of company information on
the Web Site for the company data received.
You can find this information at http://www.posc.org/technical/data_exchange/DLISChannelDictionary.html.
Industry Publication of Standard Curve Name Data (PWLS Phase I Results)
The prototype implementation is found at http://spwla.posc.org/pwlsv1/.
- The prototype interface has been developed. It is believed to be close to
meeting the requirements for expert use of an industry dictionary.
- The data in the prototype will be upgraded to align with the current,
corrected Phase I results.
- A "lighter weight" interface will be developed for use by
general well log data users. Design and development of the lightweight interface
is pending.
Use Cases
Following a review of a draft list of use cases focused largely on the use of generic
curve classifications, it was agreed to extend the use cases further.
Industry Standard Curve Names
Following an analysis of all aspects of the issues surrounding the
generic curve classification identifiers known as Property Type and Curve Type,
there was a discussion of findings and conclusions at the June Technical
Meeting. It was agreed that:
- POSC should poll the well log data
consumers to determine which forms of the generic classification were
needed and whether the consumers were prepared to fund any ongoing additional
maintenance effort. An initial questionnaire was designed and tested. It proved
to be too difficult to use. A second simpler questionnaire is being
prepared.
- POSC should proceed with the PWLS generic classification
development and deployment work (under terms of the proposals above) not waiting
for the ultimate resolution of this issue. Ongoing.
- POSC should be prepared to make a
proposal for reducing or eliminating the remaining differences in vocabulary
(word use) at such time as it has been agreed that both word-based and mnemonic
forms will be maintained based on the results of the user poll. Pending.
Phase II Focus Areas

- Details for Phases IIa, IIb, IIc, and IId are published in the associated MS
Excel file.
- In summary, the types of tools to be addressed in Phase IIb and IIc are:
- Cement Evaluation
- Collar Location
- Element Analysis
- Flowmeter
- Formation Pressure
- Fluid Density
- Directional
- Magnetic
- Neutron Decay
- Pressure, Temperature
- Spectral Gamma Ray
- The Phase IId proposal is for composited and interpreted well log
curves for generalist usage
